Beyond the Curtain: Materiality and Devotion in Armenian Art

Be among the first to experience Beyond the Curtain: Materiality and Devotion in Armenian Art, a new exhibition curated by Anahit Gasparyan that explores Armenian religious art through the materials that have shaped and embodied devotional experience.

At the center of the exhibition is the Mardin Altar Curtain, accompanied by the Garabed Gospel, which connects the exhibition to the traditions and practices of medieval Armenian Christianity. Together, these works invite us to look beyond religious art as an abstract expression of faith and instead consider how devotion is experienced through the physical world. Manuscripts, reliquaries, crosses, clothing, textiles, and other sacred objects reveal the significance of the materials from which they were made. Parchment, metal, thread, wood, and other elements become vessels of faith, artistry, ritual, memory, and cultural continuity.

Join us for an exclusive members-only preview and reception to celebrate the opening of this compelling exhibition. Enjoy an early look at the exhibition, gather with fellow Museum members, and discover the stories and material traditions woven throughout Armenian religious art.
